The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) wrapped up its orientation week with a keynote address from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua. He challenged the new students to approach their university years with discipline, creativity, and purpose. Prof. Mutua began by paying tribute to parents and guardians for their commitment in ensuring their children joined university. He noted that some families had gone as far as selling land and other assets to cover tuition fees. “You are privileged to be here. Appreciate the effort that has been made to bring you to TU-K,” he told the first years.

Begin your TU-K experience with an immersive week designed to prepare you for academic success, personal growth, and campus life.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEEE) hosted a team from Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) on the 27th of August 2025. The visit was part of a practical industry-based upskilling training and focused on new technologies that are currently used in automation and heavy current systems. The team, under the auspices of Universal Technology Associates Limited, was led by the company’s Consulting Director, Eng. John Wenyaa. It comprised of 15 engineers and technical staff who are part of a 4-week training programme in automation. Notably, three of the trainees are TU-K alumni.

The Technical University of Kenya kicked off its five-day orientation programme with an inspiring reminder to incoming students: their professional journey starts the moment they arrive on campus.

Day One saw hundreds of excited first-year students fill the Main Hall, eager to learn about their new academic home. The Assistant Dean of Students in charge of Sports, Mr. Maurice Ochieng, together with staff from the Office of the Dean of Students and the Directorate of Student Support Services, welcomed the freshers.

Miss Shelmith Nelima, a student from the Department of Design and Creative Arts, has been selected as a Millennium Fellow for the Class of 2025. The Millennium Fellowship, a programme of the United Nations Academic Impact and the Millennium Campus Network, supports student leaders, who advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in their communities. This year, the Fellowship attracted over 60,000 applicants from more than 7,500 campuses worldwide. Out of these, only 290 campuses, an equivalent of 4% were selected to host just over 4,000 Fellows. Being chosen as part of this global community is a remarkable achievement that highlights vision, and dedication to social impact. Applicants were drawn from countries including; USA, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Australia, Kenya, India among others.

Second and third year Diploma students held an exhibition to showcase their projects. The second-year students’ project was to design a Chapel for ‘Prayers Beyond Boundaries’ (PBB) Ministry in Mai Mahiu, while the third year students’ project was to design Innovation Centres. The event held at the University on 17^th August, 2025, was attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Maurice Amutabi, Chairman Department of Architecture, Design and Planning (DADP) Dr. Joseph Kedogo, Lecturer Arch. Joel Oyuga, Pastor Amos Mbugua (PBB), Director Polygon Model Makers Ltd Mr. Caleb Otieno among others.

On August 5, 2025, students from the Department of Hospitality and Human Ecology presented their final-year fashion project. The final-year students pursuing a Bachelor's Degree programme in Fashion Design & Technology displayed their skills, business initiatives, and creative works in a show that was filled with pomp and colour. Modelling was at the epicentre of the occasion, with several models gracing the catwalk as music set the rhythm and energy of the showcase. The annual event serves as a stage for students to demonstrate their talent, highlight their skills, and share their artistic expression.

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) hosted a benchmarking delegation from Garissa University. The visit was part of a collaborative effort to share best practices in university management and administration. The two-member delegation was from the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Garissa University. It consisted of Mr. Abdullahi Omar, Head of Administrative Services, and Ms. Asiya Mohammed, Senior Administrator. Their objective was to gain insight into TU-K’s governance structures and operational procedures and policies in the various administrative departments.

On August 5th, 2025, the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) conducted an intensive training session on fire safety for personnel serving at the senior staff common room and the main canteen. The training was coordinated by the Department of Property and Facilities Management. Its primary objectives were to deepen staff understanding of fire safety procedures and ensure adherence to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 2007. The session was facilitated by Mr. Wickliffe Sungu, the University Safety Technician. Mr Sungu has extensive experience in the subject, having worked with the Kenya Fire Brigade and the Red Cross, hence affording substantial practical expertise to the training.

The Technical University of Kenya has rolled out a four-day productivity mainstreaming training programme for members of its Productivity Mainstreaming Committee, aimed at fostering a value-driven culture across the university operations. The training ran from Monday, 28^th to Thursday, 31^st July, 2025.

This initiative is in line with the 2024/2025 Performance Contracting Guidelines, which recognise productivity as a core performance indicator for public institutions. The decision to introduce this indicator stems from the Government’s growing concern that while performance scores have often been high, they do not necessarily reflect improved efficiency and effectiveness in the operations.

The Africa Tech Challenge (ATC) season 10, was launched today at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K). The challenge, under the theme, "Dream and Invent Your Future", is a continental competition that aims to empower Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students by fostering innovation and skills development.

Twelve African countries, including; Kenya, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are represented in the competition which has attracted 56 participants. It will focus on CNC turning, Mechanical Drawing Engineering, CAD design, and Mobile Application Development.

TU-K has taken a major step toward international academic collaboration with an American institution by hosting a delegation from the University of Florida (UF) to discuss the Gator Africa Initiative, a strategic programme aimed at strengthening research, teaching, and exchange partnerships.

The visit today, 27^th July 2025, by a delegation from UF to TU-K, focused on exploring mutual interests in advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with a special emphasis on Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).

The Department of Creative Arts and Media held a live performance assessment concert of the final-year students on 23^rd July, 2025. The event, which had African Rhumba and Jazz as its theme, featured music from across the continent by fusing jazz improvisation with soulful rhumba melodies.

The Technical University of Kenya staff and students participated in the 2^nd edition of the Design Thinking Hackathon themed “Sustainable Innovation for African Growth”, which kicked-off on Friday, 18^th July 2025, at Riara University.

The 3-day hackathon provided a unique opportunity for students to transform their ideas into impactful solutions through the power of design thinking. This initiative was a collaboration between the TU-K, Riara University (RU) and Anza Village.

On Tuesday 22^nd July, 2025, Members of the Food Science Club from the Department of Biological and Life Sciences (DBLS), made an enriching industrial visit to Thika-based Kevian Kenya Limited. The visit provided an exposure to key food and beverage manufacturing processes including; fruit juice extraction, pasteurisation, aseptic packaging, and quality control systems.

The team also visited the company’s laboratories.

In an effort to promote global academic cooperation, a group of engineering students and faculty from Weixian College, China, visited the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) on Thursday 17^th July 2025. The tour, organised by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology (FSST), marked a major step in the development of international collaborations in higher education.

Two students from TU-K have been selected to represent both the University and the country at the prestigious GAIAthon '25 Awards Ceremony, known as GAIAfest, set to take place in Accra, Ghana, from 18^th to 21 August 18, 2025.

Their selection follows a highly competitive internal GAIAthon competition held at TU-K, where seven groups of students drawn from disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering, geospatial science, mathematics, physics, and environmental studies, competed by presenting digital solutions to real-world challenges. The top three teams were shortlisted by faculty supervisors and honoured during an awards ceremony held in the University.

Bachelor of Technology in Journalism students got an opportunity to present their final-year project to mainstream media editors who critiqued the work.

Senior Print Production Editor at Standard Group (SG) Ms. Anne Mukei together with Mr. Ochieng’ Rapuro, a former Editorial Director, reviewed a 40-page editorial magazine during a Newspapers Publishing Project moderation seminar held at the University on 17^th July, 2025.

Kenya and China have officially unveiled the Sino-Kenya Craftsman Academy at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K), marking a significant milestone in vocational training and youth empowerment across Africa.

The academy, a collaborative initiative between the Inner Mongolia Technical College of Mechanics and Electrical Engineering (IMTCME), China, and TU-K, is designed to serve as a dynamic, multidisciplinary platform for nurturing technical talent and cultivating artisan skills among young people. By promoting the spirit of craftsmanship, the academy aims to equip learners with practical competencies aligned with industry needs, while also fostering cultural and technological exchange between the two nations.  Set to become a regional centre of excellence in TVET, the academy highlights the deepening strategic partnership between Kenya and China.

The Technical University of Kenya, on Monday held a memorial service and candle lighting for the late Peter Marite, a final-year student who succumbed to injuries following a road accident on Friday, 4^th July 2025. The late Marite was en route to Nairobi from his home in Kajiado South. The late student was pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting option.
