TU-K Air Monitoring Innovation Declared the Best at IEK Convention

Two students from the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Felix Mazinza and Cecilia Otieno, were declared winners of the student innovation presented during the 30th Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) Annual International Convention. The event, themed “Engineering A New World,”  was held from the 14th to 17th November 2023 at a Mombasa hotel. The student innovation on Application of IoT in Monitoring of Air Quality was declared the best among the presentations presented from other universities. The students were awarded a trophy, a cash prize of Sh50,000 and they were also presented with certificates.

This year’s convention was officially opened by the Deputy President, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua who was accompanied by Hon. Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public Works.

The event was aimed to promote sustainable and innovative solutions to societal challenges, while building partnerships that will bolster engineering education, training, and practice at the local, and international level to support Kenya's economic development.

On its first day, the convention held the 6th Women Engineers Summit themed "Beyond Excellence: The Future of Women in Engineering” and the 2nd Future Leaders Summit themed “Future Leaders Fostering Positive Impact.”.

The convention drew attendees from across the globe including all Presidents of the Engineering Professional bodies in Africa, representatives from the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO), and the World Council of Civil Engineers (WCCE).

TU-K was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise, Prof. Paul Wambua, and the Executive Dean Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment Prof. Edwin Ataro, Prof. Alex Muumbo, Prof. Leonard Masu, Prof. David Koteng’ Dr. Fredrick Mutua, Mr. Paul Ochola, a lecturer in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

During the same event, Kenya played host to the 18th World Council of Civil Engineers (WCCE) General Assembly. WCCE is a global platform of civil engineering societies, civil engineering-related companies, non- governmental organizations related to civil engineering, academic institutions, and individual professional civil engineers

The Technical University of Kenya in partnership with Exploring Visual Cultures will be hosting the 4th International Conference from November 27th to 29th, 2024 at the Edge Convention Centre, Nairobi. The theme of the conference is AI Media Innovations, Applications, Visual Culture, Challenges, and Future Trends. The call for papers is out and the deadline for submission of abstracts is on 31st May, 2024.
