TU-K Ranked 7th in Kenya

The Technical University of Kenya has been ranked number seven in Kenya in the latest world university ranking by Webometrics. In Africa, TU-K appears at number 144 while in the world it appears at number 3949 out of 12011 institutions that were ranked.Universities are ranked under “Presence”, “Openness”, “Impact” and “Excellence” commonly known as research.
In this category of Excellence, only 12 Kenyan universities were ranked as follows: UoN (1), Moi (2), JKUAT (3), KU (4), Egerton (5), Maseno (6), TU-K (7), Strathmore (8), Masinde Muliro (9), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (10), Daystar University (11) and Catholic University of East Africa (12). This was the first TU-K was ranked in “Excellence”. The implication of the ranking in excellence is that the University’s contribution to knowledge through research has come of age. The University of Nairobi is ranked at number one in Kenya and East Africa. KU is ranked number two followed by Moi (3), JKUAT (4), Egerton (5), Strathmore (6), TU-K (7), Maseno University (8), Masinde Muliro (9) and Murang’a University closes the top ten category.
In Africa the University of Nairobi is ranked number 10, while its contemporaries Makerere and the University of Dar es Salaam are ranked number 12 and 35 respectively. The continent has 1902 universities. Only 8 Kenyan universities appear among the top 200 institutions of higher learning in Africa. UoN appears at number 10, KU (28), Moi (47), JKUAT (62), Egerton (125), Strathmore (134), TU-K (144), Maseno (154). In the top 4000 universities in the world, only seven local universities appear out of the 12,011 institutions that were ranked. UoN was ranked number 956 in the world followed by KU (1674), Moi (2108), JKUAT (2436), Egerton (3622), Strathmore (3730) and TU-K (3949).
Slightly over 30,000 institutions were evaluated world-wide but only 12,011 met the criteria for ranking by Webometrics. The Webometrics research data used for ranking is obtained through analysis of data from Scimago and Scopus.
