The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benedict Mutua, presided over a special ceremony to receive trophies won by the TU-K Drama Club at the recently concluded Kenya Universities Performing Arts Association (KUPAA) National Drama and Performing Arts Festival, held at Egerton University.
The trophy handover ceremony took place in TU-K’s Main Hall, attended by acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Francis Gatheri (Academic and Students Affairs), Prof. Peter Matu (Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology), Prof. Omondi Oketch (Dean of Students), Mr Patrick Ogutu (Patron of the Drama Club), Dr Teresa Atieno (Assistant Patron), and other senior university officials.
The event also saw the presence of major industry players in the Kenyan Film and Drama Festivals, alongside students and staff.
During his speech, Prof. Mutua applauded the team for their outstanding performance and reaffirmed the University management’s commitment to supporting future artistic endeavours. He also encouraged student leaders to actively engage with the administration for assistance whenever necessary.
The VC presented certificates to individual performers who excelled in various categories, acknowledging their dedication, discipline, and talent.
TU-K was crowned the most disciplined university and earned multiple top awards, including the Outstanding Historical Play for The Untold Story of Gor Mahia, written by Prof. Omondi Oketch. Another standout performance was the Cultural Creative Dance Mundu-Kh-Mundu by Trevor Oloo.
Individual accolades included:
- Solo Verse Champion: Belinda Arika (4th-year Journalism student)
- French Solo Verse Winner: Amos Nashisako (4th-year Engineering student) performed by Sophie Tressy Awino
- French Solo Verse 2nd Runners-Up: Maureen Mutinda (1st-year, Accounting and Finance)
- Best Male Soloist: Hesbon Awiti (Journalism)
- Best Female Soloist: Sheryl Akinyi (3rd-year, Accounting and Finance)
- Runners-Up Solo Verse: Wangari Maina (4th-year, Department of Applied Chemistry)
- Best Actor in Historical Play: Nyakundi Mayaka (3rd-year Diploma, Office Administration and Technology)
- 2nd Runner-Up in Historical Play: Andre Etulo (3rd-year, Civil Engineering)
- Best Actress: Belinda Arika (2nd Runners-Up), Sheryl Akinyi (Runner-Up)
- Best Actor in English Play: Noel Odhiambo (4th-year, Office Administration and Technology)
- Best Historical Play Cast
- Best Female and 2nd Best Male Dancers in Mundu-Khu-Mundu
- Overall Best Director: Prof. Omondi Oketch
