The DVC-Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), has urged First-Year students to fully participate in class work, discuss issues with their lecturers and ask critical questions.
“A student will interrogate the teacher if he/she understands the subject. Read widely, do not only relay on lecturers notes.”
Prof. Amutabi emphasised that time management was an essential component in academic and scholarly life. “Avoid trouble and stay organised. Uphold academic integrity, avoid exam malpractices such as plagiarism and shortcuts that compromise your education,”
The DVC was addressing the new students during day-two of their orientation programme.
Prof Amutabi urged the students to join clubs, societies and sporting activities that are available in the University, but not to overcommit into many of them. “I will be happy to hear that some of you are representing the university in football, hockey athletics both locally and abroad.”
The DVC cautioned the students against betting and gambling, joining wrong friends and groups hence falling victim of peer pressure. “Many of the disciplinary cases we handle in the University are caused by peer pressure. The Office of the Dean of students will assist you on personal matters since we have counselors, chaplains among other officers who will guide and assist you in handling your challenges if and when they arise.”
“Your degree begins now after this address. We would like you to Understand the university structure, make use of your time and focus on the core mandate that brought you here,” he said.
Earlier on, the new students were taken through Admission and Registration procedures.
