MESSAGE FROM DEAN OF STUDENTS
I take this opportunity to welcome and congratulate you for gaining admission for studies at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K). Earning a place in our institution of prestige is no small achievement and we are delighted that you have joined the institution to further your intellectual journey. We are confident that the education and training you will receive shall successfully prepare you for the real world.
The office of Dean of Students exists to support students’ success not only in academics but in all aspects of life while at the Technical University of Kenya. Services offered by the office engage students socially, emotionally and spiritually while developing students’ character to realize the development of learning climates that are conducive to attaining high standards of academic achievement.
The office of Dean of Students located at block L; 4th floor (L41/1) next to Administration block is responsible for the following:
- Providing support regarding general welfare of students.
- Providing financial literacy on HELB and bursaries: Ratansy and Joe Wanjui bursaries.
- Conducting students’ elections.
- Coordinating matters of Student Association of Technical University of Kenya (SATUK).
- In charge of student Center: collecting proceeds and using it to take care of needy students.
- Coordinating policy of student’s demise including taking care of staffs’ and students’ welfare during the funeral.
- Coordinating students’ association and clubs.
The office has four departments:
- Students’ Accommodation and Catering services — Located next to Senior Staff Common Room
- Provides students accommodation in both universities and private hostels.
- Catering in the hostels and on campus (Main Canteen).
- Sports and Co-Curricular activities — Located at D1
- Plans and organizes students’ sports.
- Counseling — Located at D1
- Chaplaincy — Located in L41 provide spiritual and religious needs: spiritual care, support and counselling.

Students' Governance (SATUK)
The Dean of Students directly oversees the Students Association of the Technical University of Kenya (SATUK). The leadership constitutes seven (7) Council and ten (10) Board officials elected as per the SATUK Constitution 2018 (Revised 2024) Article 14.

Student Accommodation and Catering
The University provides accommodation and catering services to staff and students on campus and in the hostels. Currently, the University provides accommodation to 424 students at both men’s and women’s hostels. To cater for the entire student population, the University has partnered with various hostels to provide boarding facilities. Through the government support, expansion of accommodation facilities at the South B Campus is underway, with estimate bed capacity of 5,000.
Accommodation Services
- The Men’s Hostel is located in Nairobi South B, close to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and about 800 meters from the South B shopping Centre. Public transport is available till late. It may be accessed from both South B/Mariakani and Mombasa road for those driving.
- The Women’s Hostel is situated at Upper-hill/Community on the Milimani Commercial Courts close. Students can access the hostel on foot at the side gate on Ngong road opposite Upperhill road or by public means through the community bus terminus.
Both hostels provide subsidized meals to students. As the University accommodation is limited, we provide detailed information on private hostels, their location and fees payable, to ease the students’ search. All hostels listed have been duly vetted for their appropriateness on location, capacity, security, provision of meals, hygiene and their ability to provide a conducive environment for study. This information is available free at the Assistant Director’s office on the main campus. Students are encouraged to visit the recommended hostels in person to verify details before entering into a contract with their managements or agents.
Catering Services
The department is responsible for the provision of students’ subsidized meals at the hostels and in the University students’ Main Canteen.
Scholarships & Bursaries
Students can benefit from various scholarship opportunities usually announced through departmental sections as well as at the notice boards.
List of Bursary
- SATUK Bursary — An annual grant from the SATUK budget under the SATUK Academic Secretary’s vote.
- Joe Wanjui — An Annual Educational Grant to University Students from Joe B Wanjui Education Trust Fund. It aims to benefit Bright Female Students Module I undertaking STEM courses from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Rattansi Bursary — An Annual Grant to needy students at the Technical University of Kenya through Rattansi Educational Trust Fund offered via two (2) tranches; One through direct allocation by Rattansi Educational Trust Fund to individual students and through money sent to the institution for disbursement to needy students availed in office of the Dean of Students.
- Other External Funding — Students can also apply for financial support from HELB, CDF and County Government Bursaries.

Students are encouraged to join various clubs to help in networking, develop leadership skills among other benefits. New Clubs and Associations can be registered through online student portal. Approval of new clubs is undertaken upon submission of duly filled online registration form, clubs’/Associations’ constitution and Minutes ratifying the formation of Clubs/ Associations.

Students with Special Needs
The Office of the Dean of Students is dedicated to promoting inclusion and addressing the welfare of students with special needs and those from underprivileged backgrounds. This includes students who are deaf, blind, have cerebral palsy, physical disabilities, or are of short stature, among others. Ms. Gor Cindy, a Senior Technician – SLI supports this section.
Students with disabilities are identified and registered with the Office of the Dean of Students through the assistance of the SATUK Representative for Persons with Disabilities. The office prioritizes support for students with disabilities and those in need, assisting in areas such as accommodation, meals, and financial aid, including bursaries. Additional services, such as sign language interpretation during lectures and staff training on disability accommodations, are also facilitated by the office.
Furthermore, the office offers support to students requiring assistance with medical insurance.

The Chaplaincy provides for the freedom of religious associations and worship, including the Catholics, Protestants and Muslims.
The Mandate of the Chaplaincy Unit
The mandate of the University Chaplaincy unit revolves around providing spiritual, emotional, and pastoral support to the university community. The specific mandate is summarized as follows:
- Provide spiritual care, lead services, and offer counseling to students and staff of diverse faiths.
- Assist with personal, academic, and family issues, focusing on mental health, bereavement, and crisis intervention.
- Organize worship, prayer sessions, and religious events, while promoting interfaith dialogue and activities.
- Provide counsel on moral and ethical dilemmas in both personal and academic contexts.
- Foster inclusivity by encouraging mutual respect and understanding among people of all faiths.
- Guide students and staff on matters of faith, philosophy, and life purpose.
- Serve as a bridge between the university and religious groups, ensuring the fulfillment of religious needs within university policies.
