Panel Explores the Role of Higher Education Institutions in Tackling Global Challenges

Prof. (Eng.) Paul Wambua, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), recently participated in a high-level panel discussion on ‘The role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in addressing global challenges’ at the University of Alicante, Spain.

The session, which took place on 6th May 2025 brought together other Deputy Vice-Chancellor from Kazakhstan, Sierra Leone, and Spain (Alicante University), as well as the Executive Secretary of the Tanzania Commission for Universities.

The vibrant discussions underscored the important role that universities play as agents of diplomacy and innovation in an increasingly dynamic and competitive global environment. Panelists delved into a range of pressing global issues that are currently influencing University education, such as climate change, health, political instability, equality, and the need for more inclusive international partnerships. Drawing on diverse experiences and perspectives, the panelists agreed on the shared responsibility of Higher Education Institutions in driving sustainable solutions across regions and academic disciplines.

In his remarks, Prof. (Eng.) Wambua dived into the challenges faced by many universities in Africa, particularly limited funding and restrictive policies, and the approach the Technical University of Kenya has employed to tackle them. He called for more inclusive and equitable models of global academic engagement. He also emphasised the need for innovative teaching methods and curriculum review to fully embrace problem-based learning to help address some challenges brought about by use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.

Prof. Wambua's participation reinforces TUK’s expanding influence on the global stage in shaping the future of higher education and sustainable development.
