Two Master’s students from the Department of Computing and Information Technology, Mr. Newton Malongo and Mr. Fredrick Odawa, are set to travel to Germany in April to undertake the Summer Semester at The University of Passau. During the semester, the students will enrol for course units, complete assignments including Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) as well as projects. Upon successful completion of the semester, they will receive official transcripts.
According to Dr. Samson Njuki, Chairperson of the Department of Computing and Information Technology, once the students return, the transcripts will be analysed and credits earned may be recognised so that the students are exempted from equivalent units offered at TU-K.
The student exchange programme is part of an ongoing partnership between TU-K and the University of Passau.
“This partnership will see both institutions benefit through the development of curricular. Some of their professors will come to TU-K to give talks,” explained Dr. Njuki.
Some aspects of the partnership have already been realised. On 13th February 2026, Prof. Annette Hauti-Janisz from the University of Passau delivered a lecture on Artificial Intelligence to students and staff in the Department of Computing and Information Technology. Her presentation was centred on what makes Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot impactful and influential across disciplines.
The lecture was officially opened by Prof. Paul Wambua, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise, who was accompanied by Prof. Gordon Fraser, Chair of Software Engineering II at The University of Passau.
The session was also attended by senior faculty members, including Prof. Peter Matu and Prof. Francis Gatheri, Executive Deans of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology and the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology respectively; Prof. Salesio Kuira, Director ICT Services and Prof. George Amollo from the Department of Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The visit by the two professors from The University of Passau, also forms part of the Erasmus+ KA171 Exchange Programme, further strengthening academic ties between the institutions.
