Kipchumba Biwott, a Tutorial Fellow in the Department of Biological and Life Sciences, has received the highest academic honour —‘Summa Cum Laude’ from the University of Debrecen in Hungary, where he completed his Doctoral Research in Molecular, Cellular and Immune Biology. This achievement marks a significant milestone in a journey that began at TU-K, where he graduated with First-Class Honours in the Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology in 2014.
Under the supervision of Dr. Zsolt Bacso of the Department of Biophysics and Cell Biology, Biwott successfully defended his doctoral thesis and has now been awarded the Ph.D. His studies were supported through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship programme offered through Kenya’s Ministry of Education.
Two other graduates from the Department of Biological and Life Sciences at TU-K, who also benefited from the same scholarship, recently completed their Master’s degrees. Mr. Alexander Mwaimbe earned a Master of Science in Molecular Biology from the University of Debrecen, while Ms. Maureen Jelagat Chepsom graduated with a Master of Science in Agricultural Biotechnology from MATE University.
Dr. Patrick Okanya, the Chairperson of the Department of Biological and Life Sciences who attended Dr. Biwott’s virtual public thesis defense in November, says the international recognition of TU-K Dr. Biwott staff and students underscores the University’s motto, “Education and Training for the Real World.” He noted that such achievements reflect TU-K’s growing commitment to research excellence, collaboration, and global engagement, affirming that TU-K graduates excel globally.
Dr. Okanya added that Dr. Biwott’s advanced research experience in Hungary will be instrumental in strengthening the development of Biophysics and Cell Biology curricula within the department.
Dr. Biwott also holds a Master of Science in Forensic Biochemistry from TU-K and a Master of Science in Biotechnology from Kenyatta University, the latter funded through the prestigious DAAD In-Country Scholarship.
He has actively contributed to global scientific dialogue, presenting at major international conferences such as the Hungarian Molecular Life Sciences Conference (2023), the EMBO Conference in Marseille (2024), the MOSBRI Scientific Conference at Institut Pasteur, Paris (2025), and several American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) annual meetings in Washington, D.C., San Diego, and Philadelphia. He has also authored and co-authored peer-reviewed papers in reputable international journals, expanding both his scientific impact and global networks.
Dr. Biwott is a member of several professional organisations, including the Biorisk Management Association of Kenya (under IFBA), the Scientists of Kenya Association (SCOKA), and the Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society of Kenya.
