The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benedict Mutua, has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving recurrent challenges of missing marks and delayed resits, assuring students that the issues will soon be eliminated. Addressing students and staff during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly- elected Student Association of The Technical University of Kenya (SATUK) officials for the 2026/2027 academic year, Prof. Mutua said that this time, students can expect improvement.
He explained that the University was implementing stronger systems to ensure that marks are recorded, processed, and released on time, while also improving the coordination and scheduling of re-sits and supplementary examinations.
“When reviewing results, I asked if we have students who were supposed to graduate many years ago, and maybe they have a supplementary or special exam, can we set exams for them so that they can sit during the regular examination period? That has never happened before. I wanted them to sit the exams so that they can get the opportunity to graduate when others are graduating on Tuesday 31st March 2026.”
The VC urged students to work in close collaboration with the Academic Registrar to ensure that emerging issues are addressed promptly.
“We have the August regular time for special and supplementary exams, so that by the time you start September, you have completed the academic year’s work. This business of missing marks, we don't want to have it anymore. As you move to second year, you must have known your results. But the only thing I request of you, and also the Academic Secretary, is to work together with the Academic Registrar.”
The VC directed the incoming student leadership, particularly the Academic Secretary, to take an active role in safeguarding students’ academic interests through early engagement and consistent follow-ups.
“We don’t want to hear at the 14th week that a course was not taught, or when the exams are out, that you were not taught, start monitoring your class and results from the first day.”
The newly elected SATUK officials for the 2026/2027 academic year were sworn into office on Friday, 27 February 2026, at the Main Hall. The swearing-in was conducted by the Chief Legal Officer, Mrs. Ruth Kirwa.
The VC congratulated the incoming student leaders and emphasised the importance of unity and collaboration. He urged them to prioritise on the welfare of students and uphold integrity in their leadership.
“I want to extend my warmest congratulations to the elected SATUK body. I know you went through a lot to make it to where you are. It was not easy. But this is the time to reach out to other comrades you were competing with.”
“Leadership is a responsibility entrusted to you by your fellow students. Work together, embrace dialogue, and remain accountable to those you serve.”
Prof. Mutua took the opportunity to commend the outgoing SATUK officials for their dedication and contribution to maintaining stability within the University.
“This is my third year to work with SATUK, and I can stand without any fear to say this is a team that has led others. This team came at a time when the University was in a very critical state of instability. We had two strikes, one national, one local. Other universities were closing, but I asked them, ‘Are we going to close the University?’ and they said no. That decision ensured that education continued, and stability returned to TU-K.”
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Maurice Amutabi told the incoming team that work has already started. He asked them to maintain a checklist to keep track of their targets, embrace constant dialogue, teamwork and continuous consultation as a best practice for good performance.
The Acting Dean of Students, Mr. Maurice Ochieng, encouraged the incoming student leadership to move forward steadily, consult, ask questions and above all study hard and pass their examinations.
The swearing in ceremony was attended senior members of staff including Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Alfred Orina, Exceutive Deans, other senior members of staff and students. Below is the full list of the SATUK 2026/2027 officials:
