A Journalism and Mass Communication student at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) scooped the prestigious Rising Star Award at the 25th Chinese Proficiency Bridge Competition for Kenyan Colleges held at the University of Nairobi on 30th April, 2026. Masha Fely Owour, who was praised for her display of Chinese cultural intelligence, also emerged top in the Non-Confucius Institute Category (Awarded as the top-performing student representing an institution outside of the specialised Confucius Institutes) as well as emerged as the 3rd runner-up overall out of 20 elite contestants in the national competition category.
She was awarded with two medals of honour, a smart watch, a power bank, a mobile phone and other high-tech gadgets including a Chinese smart watch and translator and two certificates.
The competition was organised by the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi in collaboration with the Confucius Institute-UoN under the global theme ‘One World, One Family’ bringing together more than 600 students from various colleges and universities from across the country.
Ms Owuor presented a speech on ‘Global unity and my journey as a journalism student’ and performed a high-energy rendition of ‘Huo Yuanjia’ (霍元甲), a song celebrating martial arts heritage.
“My performance was a fusion of fluent Mandarin vocals and Kung Fu choreography and Chinese dance, which earned the highest praise for the rising star award,” explained Ms Owuor during a press interview.
The national finals featured twenty elite competitors battling through three intense rounds: a prepared Mandarin speech, a rapid-fire question and answer session on Chinese culture, and a talent showcase.
Masha excelled in all three, impressing judges with her poise, linguistic precision, and stage presence. Her accolades showcase TU-K’s growing strength in language and internationalisation programmes.
“This is a historic moment for TU-K. Masha has not only made her university proud but has placed us firmly on the map as a powerhouse in Chinese language and cultural diplomacy,” said Teresia Kamau, the team leader and representative from the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE).
The delegation was led by Ms Teresia Kamau (FEBE) and supported by senior faculty members Dr. Ali Adan Ali, Dr. Catherine Nandaine, Dr. Orleans Onindo, and David Otieno.
Dr. Ali Adan Ali said: “Presence of team members and staff provided psychological anchor for the win. TU-K is now pushing forward to expand cultural opportunities.”
“My goal is to merge my journalism expertise with my proficiency in Chinese to work within international media and global organisations. I am determined to travel to China to further my studies and pursue a professional career, serving as a communications bridge between Kenya and China,” said Ms Owuor.
