Researchers in the East Africa region can now competitively navigate through the research and grants landscape having been trained on how to develop clear, persuasive, and compelling grant proposals. This follows a specialized training workshop titled "Mastering Research Proposals: Integrating Transdisciplinary Approaches for Impactful Research” that was hosted by TU-K from 31^st May to 3^rd June 2025 at the Main Hall.  The workshop was organised by a consortium of organisations, in a bid to enhance a sustainable research ecosystem across countries in the global South, specifically in East Africa.

TU-K may soon enter a collaboration with the University of Juba (UoJ). Prof. Andrew Kiri Amegovu, the Director in-charge of Research and Publication at UoJ, led a delegation that recently visited TU-K for benchmarking. Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Institutional Advancement and Enterprises (IAE), Prof. Paul Wambua, along with his counterpart in charge of Research and Technology Development (RTD), Prof. Isaac Orina received the visitors.

Researchers from Global South are taking bold steps in building capacities and knowledge in astronomy and robotic telescope technology amongst the future generation of scientists. To foster a leadership role in this field, TU-K in partnership with the Sharing the Sky Programme, is hosting a 3-day workshop themed ‘Skill Development using a global telescope network for uplifting the East African astronomical research community’.

TU-K’s Dr. Julius Bosire, has been elected a Council Member for the Academia in the Kenya Editors’ Guild. The elections were on Saturday 24^th May 2025, where he beat a worthy opponent, Mr. Nathan Masambu from Daystar University.  The Kenya Editors’ Guild is a professional association of editors who work to promote Media Freedom, Credibility and Professionalism. The Council plays a key decision-making role at the guild.

In an interview with Dr. Bosire in his office following the elections, he said that as the Council Member for the Academia, he will influence decisions that affect universities and other institutions of learning that produce journalists. Additionally, he said he will also play a critical role in creating a bridge between the two institutions, tackling issues relating to training, and curricular development as well as ensure that students have the necessary equipment to meet the industry standards.

Prof. (Eng.) Paul Wambua, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), recently participated in a high-level panel discussion on ‘The role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in addressing global challenges’ at the University of Alicante, Spain.

“L’éducation est la respiration lente mais sûre d’un monde qui veut vivre.” With these powerful words, the TU-K French Club emerged the winners at the Concours d’éloquence (Public Speaking Contest) held on the 20^th of May 2025 at Alliance Française de Nairobi, beating nine other teams from other universities and Alliance Française. The topics explored in this high-level competition included education, artificial intelligence, peace, and climate change — and our students rose to the challenge with excellence. Representing the University with poise, intellect, and linguistic brilliance, TU-K Team made an unforgettable impression with their eloquent speech on “L’éducation – L’outil radical pour reconstruire le possible” (Education – The Radical Tool to Rebuild What’s Possible).

CubeKraft in partnership with the Association of Mechanical Engineering Students, recently conducted a 2-week hybrid training on CubeSat (nanosatellite) technology, to students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.The training , facilitated in partnership with The Kenya Space Agency, together with the Italian Space Agency, covered CubeSat Technology including the different Subsystems in Satellites, Mission planning, Payloads & ArduLIMo integration amongst other topics, coupled with hands-on physical training.

Maria Sanchez Marco, a visiting Professor from University of Alicante, Spain, today 23^rd Friday 2025, facilitated a workshop themed “Communications for Health Professionals” at the Main Hall. The workshop targeted students from the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences, particularly students pursuing Pharmaceutical Science and Technology.  The aim is to empower the students with potent communication skills to interact with patients and colleagues effectively in a clinical set-up.

Students from the Technical University of Kenya’s Department of Hospitality and Human Ecology will in early 2026 represent Kenya in a global tourism competition in Dubai dubbed the ‘Future Leaders Challenge (FLC)’.  TU-K won a slot in the global competition during the East African ‘Future Leaders Challenge’ that was held at Strathmore University from 28^th -29^th April 2025. The competition brought together 17 teams from various universities in East Africa to showcase creativity, innovation and ingenuity in hospitality and tourisms spheres.

An Artificial Intelligence agency under Kenya’s Office of the Special Envoy of Technology dubbed ActionLab, has committed to work with the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) in areas such as machine learning, big data, start-ups and market-driven innovations to place the country in the global AI technological growth. A delegation from ActionLab who visited TU-K revealed that the a collaboration between the two institutions would open-up several opportunities for students and staff undertaking research and innovations at various levels in AI and data-related fields including industrial placements.

The School of Graduate and Advanced Studies (SGAS) has presented to the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS) copies of students’ Master’s dissertations and PhD theses. This initiative is in respect of the ongoing collaboration between the two institutions. The team from SGAS was led by the Director, Prof. Tom Kwanya, accompanied by members of staff and Mrs Joyce Mugenya, a Senior Librarian at TU-K’s Library and Resource Learning Centre. They were received by the KNLS Acting Director, Ms. Betty Kalugho, Head of Department Preservation and Conservation, Mr. Richard Rono, and Head of Department Acquisition, Cataloguing Classification and Distribution Department.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, has today 5^th May 2025 challenged staff and students to maintain the highest standard of integrity, discipline and respect.  Speaking while addressing first-year students who completed their orientation programme on Friday last week, Prof. Mutua emphasised that TU-K values inclusivity, diversity and ethical behavior. “We all come from different regions and ethnic groups, you never applied to be born there. Respect and appreciate other people’s culture and values. We are here as a family of scholars,” said the VC.

A hybrid training workshop titled "Presentation and Grant Writing Skills was held from 28^th to 30^th April 2025. The event targeted postgraduate students, early-career researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals across various disciplines to enhance their research skills. The focus of the workshop was to empower the attendees to craft persuasive research proposals with high potential for success in addition to developing exceptional presentation skills for academic settings.

A new chapter has begun for the Student Association of Technical University of Kenya - SATUK 2025/2026 leadership. This follows the taking of the oath of office by the newly-elected SATUK leaders led by Moses Okal Odhiambo, SATUK Chairperson who is deputised by Yvone Nyanchera.  The swearing in ceremony of the newly-elected SATUK 2025/2026 representatives took place today, 30^th April 2025 at the University’s Main Hall.

The Department of Chemistry and Material Science recently organised a training workshop themed Training on Public Engagement & Science Communication for Early Career Chemists. aimed at enhancing public engagement and science communication among early-career chemists.

PhD and Master’s students from various institutions including TU-K, University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Multimedia University, Bomet University, Thika Technical Training Institute, United States International University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Chuka University participated during the blended training - physical and virtual.

The Technical University of Kenya is playing a key role in a Sh.41 Million Geodesy project, a fundamental field in physical sciences, engineering and mapping technology set to be implemented in Africa.

The project is funded by the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) bringing in collaborating universities and research institutions in South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda with TU-K as the lead institution. The project lead at Manchester University Dr. Jack Radcliffe recently visited TU-K where he met with the implementing partners in preparation for the launch of the project. He also paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Technology Development, Prof. Isaac Orina, to brief him on the project.

Professor Maurice Amutabi is the new Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs (DVC-ASA). He takes over from Prof. Paul Shiundu whose term ended in 2023. Prof. Francis Gatheri, the Executive Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, has been serving as DVC – ASA on acting capacity. In a memo to the University community, the Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Idle Farah said Prof. Amutabi will serve for a term of five years effective May 1, 2025.

On 12^th April 2025, members of staff and students planted over 1,000 trees at Langata Barracks Secondary School compound. This was in conjunction with staff, students from the school and Kenya Defence Force officers.

The tree growing exercise is part of President Dr. William Ruto’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2030, a move aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions, and reversing deforestation and restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes.

The University has in the past participated in tree growing exercises at Konza Technopolis City and Highway Secondary School, Nairobi.

Chancellor Dr. Jared Kangwana has formally been presented with his Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree certificate of the Technical University of Kenya.  The formal presentation of the degree certificate by the University Council Chairman, Dr Idle Omar Farah, happened during a breakfast meeting held at the University. Dr. Kangwana was appointed Chancellor, in April 2024 by President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, to serve for a period of five years. He was conferred with the honorary doctorate, during the 13^th graduation ceremony, held on 26^th November 2024.

On Thursday 10^th April 2025, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, led the members of the Finance and General Purpose of the University Council on a comprehensive familiarisation tour of the institution's main facilities and sites. The purpose of the tour was to evaluate the University’s physical assets to inform strategic decisions on how they may be leveraged to enhance the revenue streams.
