The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH (HZB), Berlin.  The signing ceremony took place at the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany residence in Nairobi. TU-K Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, signed the MoU in presence of Ambassador H.E Sebastian Groth, Head of the user Coordination and Technical User Support Department Helmholtz Zentrum Dr. Antje Vollmer (representing the Director). Present at the function were Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Institutional Advancement and Enterprises, Prof. Paul Wambua, Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry and Material Science, Dr. Clare Muhanji, among others.

Former Cabinet Minister and Makueni Governor, Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, has challenged students to work diligently, remain focused, steadfast and exercise integrity saying these are yardsticks for one to success.Prof. Kibwana spoke when he graced the convention on the State of Tertiary Education in Kenya, that was organized by the National Student s’ Caucus and held at the Technical University of Kenya. The caucus was led by the Executive Director, Mr. Maxwell Magawi.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedict M. Mutua attended the China- Africa Automotive Development forum and international conference themed “Intelligent Manufacturing of light weight electric Vehicles. ”The event took place from 10^th to 11^th June 2025 at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. The conference brought together scholars, Innovators, policy makers and entrepreneurs from across Africa and China to share knowledge, showcase cutting edge technologies and chart a sustainable path tailored for Africa’s Automotive Industry.

The Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy has teamed up with Wowzi, a platform that makes influencer-marketing for brands, to offer students in higher education institutions specialised training to succeed in the digital economy. Under the banner of Ajira Digital Programme, the partnership aims to equip college and university students for success in the online job market. Over the course of a three-day training programme last week at TU-K, students were exposed to digital marketing tools, international online job platforms, and professionals who will assist them in applying their knowledge in practical situations.

Technical University of Kenya (TU-K), in collaboration with Tangaza University, Africa Nazarene University, Co-operative University of Kenya, and Royal Holloway University of London, UK, are working on a collaborative research on, ‘Going Global, Advancing Inclusivity in Education.’

Dr. Holiness Nose, a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Material Science (DCMS), and her Master of Computational student Christine Muhonja, will be heading to the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) Spain, for research. The duo are beneficiaries of the Erasmus programme funded by the European Union.  The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) is one of the African countries recently selected to promote mobilities within the ERASMUS programme between The University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and TU-K.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology, Technical University of Kenya and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Strathmore University, jointly launched ‘Writing the Arts & Humanities in Africa’ journal (WAHiA) On April 15, 2025, at Strathmore University. The launch marked a significant milestone for African scholars who have been adamant on having African stories authored by those who live them.

Faith Loronyokwe, a 4 th year student pursuing Bachelor of Economics is a joint winner of the 2024 X- Culture Global Symposium and International Business Consulting Competition, recently held in St. Louis University, Missouri, in collaboration with Academy of International Business, South East Chapter, USA. Ms. Loronyokwe was placed in group 9 together with two others, Mr Francesco Benda from Italy and Mr Jonathan Moore from the USA.

The Technical University of Kenya TU-K has formally moved to corporate with Hubei University of Automotive Technology (HUAT), China, in areas of academia and industrial linkages.  A delegation led by the President of HUAT, Prof. Wang Xiao, visited TU-K where they signed an MoU. The VC, Prof. Benedict Mutua signed for TU-K. The two institutions committed to advance knowledge and innovation in the automotive and engineering disciplines.  Prof. Xiao was accompanied by Prof. Zhou Mingzhi, Vice Dean of Academic Affairs at HUAT, Prof. Su Zibo, the Chinese Director of Confucius Institute at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, and Prof Daniel Duah, the Ghanaian Director of Confucius Institute at KNUST.

The Department of Creative Arts and Media at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) held its Industry-Based Learning (IBL) Symposium for the 2024–2025 academic year in the Lecture Theatre. The event’s goal was to motivate students in Journalism and Media Studies by offering opportunities to network and engage in insightful discussions with experienced media professionals. Among the distinguished guests were investigative journalist Patrick Mayoyo, Ellen Wanjiru, Head of TV Editorial Content at Mediamax Network Ltd, Agnes Mwangangi, a Council Member for Radio at the Kenya Editors’ Guild (KEG), Emily Kaiga, Programme Officer at KEG, and Faith Mutegi, an accomplished TU-K alumnus currently working with AMREF and founder of Kushoto.org. 

Researchers in the East Africa region can now competitively navigate through the research and grants landscape having been trained on how to develop clear, persuasive, and compelling grant proposals. This follows a specialized training workshop titled "Mastering Research Proposals: Integrating Transdisciplinary Approaches for Impactful Research” that was hosted by TU-K from 31^st May to 3^rd June 2025 at the Main Hall.  The workshop was organised by a consortium of organisations, in a bid to enhance a sustainable research ecosystem across countries in the global South, specifically in East Africa.

TU-K may soon enter a collaboration with the University of Juba (UoJ). Prof. Andrew Kiri Amegovu, the Director in-charge of Research and Publication at UoJ, led a delegation that recently visited TU-K for benchmarking. Deputy Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Institutional Advancement and Enterprises (IAE), Prof. Paul Wambua, along with his counterpart in charge of Research and Technology Development (RTD), Prof. Isaac Orina received the visitors.

Researchers from Global South are taking bold steps in building capacities and knowledge in astronomy and robotic telescope technology amongst the future generation of scientists. To foster a leadership role in this field, TU-K in partnership with the Sharing the Sky Programme, is hosting a 3-day workshop themed ‘Skill Development using a global telescope network for uplifting the East African astronomical research community’.

TU-K’s Dr. Julius Bosire, has been elected a Council Member for the Academia in the Kenya Editors’ Guild. The elections were on Saturday 24^th May 2025, where he beat a worthy opponent, Mr. Nathan Masambu from Daystar University.  The Kenya Editors’ Guild is a professional association of editors who work to promote Media Freedom, Credibility and Professionalism. The Council plays a key decision-making role at the guild.

In an interview with Dr. Bosire in his office following the elections, he said that as the Council Member for the Academia, he will influence decisions that affect universities and other institutions of learning that produce journalists. Additionally, he said he will also play a critical role in creating a bridge between the two institutions, tackling issues relating to training, and curricular development as well as ensure that students have the necessary equipment to meet the industry standards.

Prof. (Eng.) Paul Wambua, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), recently participated in a high-level panel discussion on ‘The role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in addressing global challenges’ at the University of Alicante, Spain.

“L’éducation est la respiration lente mais sûre d’un monde qui veut vivre.” With these powerful words, the TU-K French Club emerged the winners at the Concours d’éloquence (Public Speaking Contest) held on the 20^th of May 2025 at Alliance Française de Nairobi, beating nine other teams from other universities and Alliance Française. The topics explored in this high-level competition included education, artificial intelligence, peace, and climate change — and our students rose to the challenge with excellence. Representing the University with poise, intellect, and linguistic brilliance, TU-K Team made an unforgettable impression with their eloquent speech on “L’éducation – L’outil radical pour reconstruire le possible” (Education – The Radical Tool to Rebuild What’s Possible).

CubeKraft in partnership with the Association of Mechanical Engineering Students, recently conducted a 2-week hybrid training on CubeSat (nanosatellite) technology, to students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.The training , facilitated in partnership with The Kenya Space Agency, together with the Italian Space Agency, covered CubeSat Technology including the different Subsystems in Satellites, Mission planning, Payloads & ArduLIMo integration amongst other topics, coupled with hands-on physical training.

Maria Sanchez Marco, a visiting Professor from University of Alicante, Spain, today 23^rd Friday 2025, facilitated a workshop themed “Communications for Health Professionals” at the Main Hall. The workshop targeted students from the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences, particularly students pursuing Pharmaceutical Science and Technology.  The aim is to empower the students with potent communication skills to interact with patients and colleagues effectively in a clinical set-up.

Students from the Technical University of Kenya’s Department of Hospitality and Human Ecology will in early 2026 represent Kenya in a global tourism competition in Dubai dubbed the ‘Future Leaders Challenge (FLC)’.  TU-K won a slot in the global competition during the East African ‘Future Leaders Challenge’ that was held at Strathmore University from 28^th -29^th April 2025. The competition brought together 17 teams from various universities in East Africa to showcase creativity, innovation and ingenuity in hospitality and tourisms spheres.

An Artificial Intelligence agency under Kenya’s Office of the Special Envoy of Technology dubbed ActionLab, has committed to work with the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) in areas such as machine learning, big data, start-ups and market-driven innovations to place the country in the global AI technological growth. A delegation from ActionLab who visited TU-K revealed that the a collaboration between the two institutions would open-up several opportunities for students and staff undertaking research and innovations at various levels in AI and data-related fields including industrial placements.
