The 15th Graduation Ceremony at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) was marked by celebration, reflection, and a clear message to graduates, that the world is competitive, unpredictable, and full of opportunity for those ready to adapt. The ceremony saw the convocation of degrees and award of diplomas and certificates to the second cohort of 2025 class.
The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benedict Mutua, has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving recurrent challenges of missing marks and delayed resits, assuring students that the issues will soon be eliminated. Addressing students and staff during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly- elected Student Association of The Technical University of Kenya (SATUK) officials for the 2026/2027 academic year, Prof. Mutua said that this time, students can expect improvement.
The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) has concluded its staff union elections, ushering in new leadership following a period of intense campaigning. Members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), elected officials who will steer the unions for the next five years.
Thirty Four members of TU-K staff have benefited from Masters’ and Ph.D full-scholarship programmes from INTI International University, based in Malaysia. This is part of the Memorandum of Understanding between TU-K and INTI International University signed in September 2023 projected at building staff and student academic and research capacity.
Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) would soon sign an MoU with the Kenya Institute of Supplies Examination Board (KISEB) to engage in professional Certification training and examination. Speaking during a sensitisation and stakeholder engagement meeting between staff from TU-K and KISEB as well as students from the Department of Business and Management Studies (DBMS), Prof. Evans Sagwa explained that the MoU will focus on other areas such as participation of KISEB as external stakeholders, in the development of supply chain management curriculum and curricula activities.
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is currently hosting a five-day training themed “Smart SCADA Maintenance Training.” The training is being conducted under a partnership between The Technical TU-K and Universal Technology Associates (UTA). The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in areas such as capacity building, student job placement, and the pursuit of joint research opportunities.
On 4th of March 2026, the Technical University of Kenya played host to Integrated Food Security Phase Classification for Acute Malnutrition (IPC-AMN) delegation led by the Regional Director, Mr. Belihu Negesse. The main agenda of the visit was to sensitise academia on IPC and strengthen recognition and uptake of IPC curriculum. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Academics and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Maurice Amutabi, received the visitors on behalf of the VC, Prof. Benedict Mutua.
The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) held a compelling public lecture themed “Choosing Leadership in a City of Theatrics.” The public lecture was delivered by Robyn T. Emerson who is the Executive Director of Yellow Rose Kenya and Founding President (Former) of Women in Real Estate.
Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) has donated 30 high-performance computers to the Technical University of Kenya’s Department of Creative Arts and Media (DCAM). The generous donation is part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions towards skill development, research, environmental conservation and economic growth.
Commissioners from The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) yesterday, on 4th March 2026, visited the University and engaged Management and staff. The delegation was led by the Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Gilda Odera, who was accompanied by Commissioner Geofrey Apollo Omondi, a representative of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, and Commissioner Leonid Ashindu, a representative of the Association of Professional Societies East Africa, and members of the SRC Secretariat. They were received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Benedict Mutua by Prof. Paul Wambua, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Institutional Advancement and Enterprise.
TU-K has received accreditation for its Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (TUK-ISERC) by the National Commission for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI).
The accreditation officially authorises TUK-ISERC to independently review, approve and monitor research involving human participants in line with national regulatory standards. It marks the culmination of a planned three-year effort by the University to establish a credible, transparent, and robust ethics review mechanism.
Two Master’s students from the Department of Computing and Information Technology, Mr. Newton Malongo and Mr. Fredrick Odawa, are set to travel to Germany in April to undertake the Summer Semester at The University of Passau. During the semester, the students will enrol for course units, complete assignments including Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) as well as projects. Upon successful completion of the semester, they will receive official transcripts.
THIRTY TWO students studying Food Science and Technology from the Department of Biological and Life Sciences, visited KWAL Kenya Wine Agencies for firsthand experience of wine production and food engineering processes. The plant tour covered aspects such as sourcing of raw materials, beverages crafting, production, marketing and delivery to consumers. The students were taken through various sections including; wine processing and fermentation, wine packaging, labeling and storage, water treatment, effluent treatment and discharge. Beside the tour, KWAL staff members discussed with the students the importance of networking, research opportunities and career progression. The team from KWAL also underscored the need for signing a MoU with TU-K to enable the students to access industrial training opportunities and joint research engagements.
The Technical University of Kenya now has a dedicated bank account handling research grants. “When I came here as Vice-Chancellor, there was a big pot where all the monies were going. But now we have a ring-fenced research account,” remarked Prof Benedict Mutua today when he hosted Prof. Nicholas Ozor, the Executive Director of the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), who donated books and research resource materials to the University Library.
The Technical University of Kenya TVET is currently conducting a five-day Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) practitioners’ training, facilitated by the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC). The training aims to strengthen institutional capacity for the effective implementation of CBET and RPL training and assessment processes.
An induction session for Cohort 8 of the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) has been conducted at TU-K. A total of 18 interns have been placed at the University, with 14 having already reported. The induction session aimed to outline the University’s expectations regarding conduct, accountability, and performance. It also provided an opportunity for interns to raise questions, concerns, or uncertainties before fully settling into their respective departments.
Ecowrap Team was declared the winner of the Technical University of Kenya Society of Chemists (TUSOC) Sustainable Food Packaging Competition. The competition was supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the ceremony was held on January 23, 2026. The winners received cash prizes and certificate of recognition.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, has been appointed as a member of the Selection Panel to pick the Board of the National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI). The appointment was made by the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Musalia Mudavadi, and published in a Kenya Gazette Notice dated 16th January 2026. The panel’s mandate shall end upon the successful appointment of the NACOSTI Board. The Selection Panel is being chaired by Prof Florence Olubayo. Alongside Prof Mutua, other members are: Daniel Oliech, George Nyakundi, Dr Stephen Ikikii, Wairimu Njage and Dr Evans Mukoye. NACOSTI’s mandate includes regulating and ensuring quality in science, technology and innovation in the country and accordingly advises the Government on the same.
Research and innovation is the next frontier in technological advancement and sustainable development in Africa. This was said by Prof. Paul Wambua, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Institutional Advancement and Enterprise, during a workshop began on 5th January, 2026 at Boma Hotel, Nairobi. Speaking during the opening session of a 5-day ‘British Academy International Writing Mentorship Workshop’, Prof. Wambua noted that local and international collaborations and mentorships are critical in driving the socio-economic development agenda. “To develop effectively, we must invest deliberately in research management, mentorship and international partnership.
