Department of Construction and Property Studies comprises of the following areas of specialization: Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Real Estate, Building Surveying, Building Construction and Technology.
Quantity Surveying
The Quantity Surveying programmes are designed to produce graduates who will be practitioners of the Quantity Surveying profession as per the requirements of the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS) of Kenya and the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK). Quantity Surveyors are concerned with aspects of construction economics ranging from provision of reports on financial feasibility, preliminary estimates, preparation of Bills of Quantities, tender procurement and evaluation, cost management, administration of construction contracts, disputes resolution, auditing and Forensic Quantity Surveying.
Construction Management
The Construction Management programmes involve studying the characteristics of construction activities and how these activities interact. Emphasis on application of a combination of skills by the students in planning, execution, monitoring and control of projects which enable them perform effectively within tight timelines, budgets, specification and client satisfaction is at the heart of the course. The course concepts, principles and practices are applied to the economical utilization of resources in the implementation of projects in the construction industry
Real Estate and Property Management
Real estate is described as the physical land and appurtenances affixed to it including improvements, natural resources and structures both above and below the earth surface. The field of real estate and Property Management is diverse, and typically encompasses land economics, property valuation, facilities and estate management, property development, property agency and marketing, risk and property portfolio management. Real estate professionals are regulated by Valuers Registration Board (VRB) and the Institute of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK).
Building Surveying and Management
Building Surveying programme is concerned with building inspections and maintenance management. The major areas covered in the discipline includes; building surveys, auditing of habitation suitability of buildings, building regulation and restoration matters, monitoring defects and offering advice on repair work, assessing the impact of unexpected damage for insurance purposes and negotiating the repair of work or a financial settlement. Building Surveying professionals are regulated by the Building Surveyors Registration Board (BSRB)
Building Construction and Technology
The Building Construction and Technology programmes aim at producing competent and highly skilled hands-own graduates who are able to uphold industry best practices in cutting-edge technologies, sustainable construction and address the emerging trends in the construction industry. Graduates from the programme are regulated by the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board (KETRB).
