DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND RESOURCE ENGINEERING
The Department of Civil and Resource Engineering (DCRE) is domiciled within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE). The Department traces its origins to the Kenya Polytechnic, where it initially offered diploma programmes. As the institution evolved into TU-K, the Department expanded its offerings, now providing undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and various short-term certification programmes.
Over the years, the Department has experienced significant growth in both student enrolment and the development of its staff and infrastructure. With a current student population of 1436, the Department continues to foster a dynamic learning environment. It boasts a team of highly qualified academic and administrative staff, all dedicated to supporting students in their academic and professional journeys.
As part of a technical university, DCRE emphasizes practical training, ensuring students gain valuable hands-on experience through a range of laboratory work. Additionally, the department incorporates a robust computer laboratory providing students with access to state-of-the-art software for design, drawing, and other emerging technologies within civil engineering. To further enhance students' real-world readiness, industrial attachments are a key feature of the curriculum, giving students vital experience before graduation.
Most of our graduates are self-employed and create job opportunities. Our graduates are also highly sought after by both public and private sector employers, with many securing roles in Government departments, private firms, and international organisations. This is a testament to the Department's strong commitment to producing competent, innovative, and industry-ready engineers.
The DCRE is committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge required to tackle civil engineering challenges. Through a curriculum designed to align with the short, medium and long term goals of the country, the department plays an integral role in supporting national development, particularly in the social pillar aimed at economic advancement.
The Department admits both Government-sponsored and self-sponsored students, with the majority of undergraduate students receiving government sponsorship while postgraduates are self-sponsored. Graduate admissions follow TUK’s established policy.
As the department of choice within FEBE, DCRE continues to be a leader in fostering talent and innovation for the engineering sector.
