Through its locally-registered company, Africa Smart Mobility Kenya Limited (ASMSKL), Spiro is set to establish a specialised training centre at TU-K aimed at developing top-talent in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. This initiative follows a recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ASMSKL and TU-K.
Spiro is an international company specialising in electric vehicles. It has branches in Benin,Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The academy to be set up at TU-K is part of Spiro’s broader effort, which include an upcoming Hackathon in October. This event will bring together programming students from Universities across East Africa to showcase their coding skills on specific projects within a limited timeframe. The best performers will be recognised and awarded.
Recently, the ASMSKL Chief Human Resource Manager, Shuvai Madanhire, led a delegation to TU-K and were received by Prof. Paul Wambua, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Institutional Advancement and Enterprise.
During the meeting, Ms. Shuvai explained that Spiro Academy will offer comprehensive technical training and development opportunities. These include an 18-month Graduate Tech Training Programme, One-Year EV Specialisation Course in partnership with Kenya Tech University and Flemming College. Other areas for collaboration will include capacity building, curriculum development, research projects, and resource mobilisation strategies.
Additionally, Spiro will provide unparalleled opportunities for TU-K students, especially those from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, by providing specialized training, Industry-Based Learning (IBL), and internship programs.
The ASMSKL team was taken on a tour of the University, focusing on the laboratories and workshops. This visit was crucial for assessing the available space before starting the remodelling process. Prof. Alex Muumbo assured the team that space would not be a limitation for the academy project. He guided them through the university’s PLC-Lab, robotics lab, Samsung lab, and both conventional and non-conventional workshops.
As the largest electric vehicle company in Africa, Spiro aims to partner with academic institutions in both the public and private sectors to foster innovation and growth in the EV industry.
