While presiding at his inaugural graduation ceremony as Chancellor, Dr. Kangwana announced his intention to set up a Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, to foster innovation, inclusion, and entrepreneurship.
The Chancellor, Hon. Dr. Jared Benson Kangwana, has announced his intention to establish a Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Technical University of Kenya.
Speaking at the 13th graduation ceremony held on the 26th November, 2024, Dr. Kangwana said the initiative was aimed at positioning the University as a hub for cutting-edge ideas, sustainable business creation, and impactful leadership.
“In an era where the world is increasingly driven by technological advancements and dynamic economic shifts, it is essential that we nurture the next generation of leaders who will drive change, create sustainable businesses, and contribute to the global economy,” said Dr. Kangwana.
He further noted that the Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is as a response to the pressing need for dynamic and inclusive institutions that champion equitable economic growth. Drawing inspiration from two influential books: Capital by Thomas Piketty and Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson, the Chancellor said the initiative underscores the critical role inclusive economic institutions play in driving sustainable development and reducing inequality.
“By establishing this Chair, we aim to create an environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, and entrepreneurship, helping to reduce inequality and unlock economic opportunities for all,” he stressed.
To showcase his dedication to see the initiative take off smoothly and succeed, Dr. Kangwana committed to provide the initial funding to establish the Chair and personally devote his time and energy to cultivate international partnerships and mobilise resources for TU-K.
TU-K conferred an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree (Honoris Causa) on Dr. Kangwana. He expressed gratitude to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, for the appointment and also paid tribute to his predecessor, Dr. Manu Chandaria, for his excellent leadership.
The Chancellor acknowledged the financial difficulties the University was facing and emphasised that resilience, creativity, and strategic planning are essential to addressing challenges.
"When times are tough, it’s not about how much you have, but how wisely you use it," he remarked adding that “we must work collaboratively, exploring all avenues for raising funds, partnerships, and investments to ensure that this institution thrives. I am confident that through determination and creativity, we will rise to the challenge.”
To secure the University’s future, Dr. Kangwana called upon stakeholders to explore diverse funding sources and stressed that it was necessary to strengthen the Alumni Association to leverage the networks of successful graduates and forming strategic partnerships with global academic and industry leaders.
The Chancellor congratulated the Class of 2024 and urged them to be adaptable and practical, ready to face new challenges with the confidence that they are educated and equipped to survive and thrive in any environment.
“The world you’re entering is full of opportunities, but it will test your patience and resilience. Equip yourselves with the right skills and mind-set to make the most of them,” said Dr. Kangwana.
“Remember, Africa is the only continent with a growing youth population globally. This is your opportunity to lead and innovate. Whether it's in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, healthcare, robotics, or manufacturing, the skills you’ve acquired here will open doors anywhere in the world.”
