VC Counsels New Students on Personal Success

VC Prof. Benedict Mutua addressing freshers at the Main Hall

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, has today 5th May 2025 challenged staff and students to maintain the highest standard of integrity, discipline and respect.  Speaking while addressing first-year students who completed their orientation programme on Friday last week, Prof. Mutua emphasised that TU-K values inclusivity, diversity and ethical behavior. “We all come from different regions and ethnic groups, you never applied to be born there. Respect and appreciate other people’s culture and values. We are here as a family of scholars,” said the VC.

Prof. Mutua urged students not to use dubious means to earn their Degrees or Diplomas instead focus on integrity and the straight path. He challenged them to use the knowledge and skills acquired from the University, to change their communities and the entire Nation.

Prof. Mutua congratulated the new students for having scored good grades that enabled them to join TU-K. “I would like to extend my warmest congratulation to you for joining TU-K. There are many universities, but for you to choose TU-K, we consider it a great honour.”

The VC assured them of the University’s commitment in nurturing them. “We are committed to excellence in education, research, innovation and service to society.  We are always thinking of how we can impact the society.”

He challenged students to become architects of change, innovation, research and leadership. He reminded them to adhere to the vision of the University, ‘To be a top rated University of technology.’ Adding that, they should use research, innovation and technological advancement to address issues affecting the country and the entire continent.

In order to solve the problems bedeviling the world today, the VC challenged students to set targets, think critically and dream big. He added that, learning goes beyond the classroom and therefore urged them to be creative.

He said, “We are an enterprenual University, well equipped with well trained and experienced manpower. Take full advantage of the resources available for instance the laboratories and workshops, be creative and utilise your talent and time appropriately.”

He asked students to focus more on success over failure, develop confidence and believe in their abilities adding that the future belongs to those who are courageous.

“Join clubs and take active roles in games, sports, drama, music and other activities.  The road ahead will be bumpy but don’t get discouraged.  We are here to support you.”

Prof. Mutua termed TU-K as an intellectually-stimulating environment. He assured the gathering of his continued commitment to staff and students welfare. “To parents, I am proud of you, we are grateful for entrusting us with your sons and daughters. They are in safe hands and we will work together in nurturing them,” added he.

The VC highlighted the challenges that led to the recent suspension of academic programmes at the University saying that there is a clear road map by the Ministry and other stakeholders to ensure that the TU-K moves forward.

“We never closed the University, but only suspended academic programmes. The issues have since been sorted out. We have already recovered the time that was lost and we will begin a new academic year on 1st of September. Our offices are open for enquires and any factual information.”

To the Management and faculty, he said, “All of us are teachers. There is Joy of being a servant. We will work together to move TU-K from a center of knowledge and excellence to a beacon of hope. To our students, we are excited to watch you grow, help you tap opportunities and shine out there. May God help you fulfill that which is in your heart.”

Present during the event held in the Main Hall were the DVC –in charge of Academics and Students Affairs (ASA), Prof. Maurice Amutabi, Executive Dean Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST) Prof. Francis Gatheri., Executive Dean Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology (FSST) Prof. Maina Matu, Dean Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) Prof. Cleophas Maende, Academic Registrar Dr. Moses Wamalwa, Heads of Departments among other members of staff.
