VC urges the incoming office bearers to leave a positive impact, serve with humility and inspire other students.
A new chapter has begun for the Student Association of Technical University of Kenya - SATUK 2025/2026 leadership. This follows the taking of the oath of office by the newly-elected SATUK leaders led by Moses Okal Odhiambo, SATUK Chairperson who is deputised by Yvone Nyanchera. The swearing in ceremony of the newly-elected SATUK 2025/2026 representatives took place today, 30th April 2025 at the University’s Main Hall.
Mrs. Ruth Kirwa, the Chief Legal Officer and an advocate of the high court of Kenya, administered the oath of office for both the members of the SATUK Council as well as members of the SATUK Board. The ceremony was witnessed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua, and attended by students and staff.
In his address, Prof. Mutua congratulated the incoming office bearers and thanked the team that conducted the elections.
“Congratulations to the incoming student leaders. You carry great trust of the students who elected you, please do not let them down,” he said.
“We value TU-K student representatives and as we witness this democratic transition, we have all the reasons to thank God.”
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the team to consult, allow for dialogue and work collaboratively with the Administration to come up with sustainable solutions to challenges facing the University.
“As a University, we look forward to a time when we will have constructive dialogue, even when things are very tough. You agree to disagree. Sometimes we have challenges. We are a family, we should sit together and come up with collective solutions,” he stressed.
Additionally, he urged the elected representatives to prioritise service to those they represent over personal gains or self-interest.
“Leadership is not just a position, but about service, integrity and courage to stand for what is right. When you become leaders, you are in the spotlight, how you dress, eat, talk can influence your peers. You have a big role to play. It is the difference that you have made to the life of others that will determine the impact that you would make.”
He echoed the words of former President Nelson Mandela who said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
The VC also reflected on Mwai Kibaki’s leadership quote : “Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed.”
The VC asked the new SATUK leaders to remain focused, and further work with the University Administration to recover lost time and ensure that the academic programmes remain as per the academic calendar. He also urged them to be good ambassadors of the University and improve efforts in ensuring that the University gets good public image.
The new SATUK Chairman, Mr. Odhiambo, commended the electoral board and thanked students for electing him as their leader. He pledged to work closely with the Administration to build a vibrant and empowered student community, where their voices are heard and issues dealt with.
He also pledged to create more opportunities for practical exposure to meet industry needs, work with Management to fast-track academic results, as well as champion wellness programmes to ensure every student thrives.
Prof Omondi Oketch, the Dean of Students, congratulated the new student leaders and wished them the very best during their tenure. He cautioned them against being held hostage by those who voted them in instead he asked them to work independently and collaboratively with the Management.
“Reality has set in and it requires a new way of thinking. You have to recalibrate. The old is gone, the new is here. Remember to consult. The Management is always willing to listen, dialogue and help you,” he stressed.
“In this world you can’t complete everything, what the outgoing team did not complete, you need to pick it up. There is no reinventing the wheel,” he stressed.
Prof. Alfred Orina, Deputy Vice-chancellor, Research and Technology Development, explained to the new SATUK representatives that student leadership is a big responsibility, and they are expected to make a positive impact.
“Activities can be intense and emotive, but remember that first of all, you are a student. Do not make bad decisions.” Prof Orina stated.
“Excel in your academics and help push a positive narrative for the University,” he concluded.
The new office bearers were elected in a peaceful, transparent, and credible election held on the 28th and 29th of April 2025. The election was overseen by Ms. Milliam Gachihi and Ms. Agnes Kabarika - Starehe Constituency IEBC officials.
