Maria Sanchez Marco, a visiting Professor from University of Alicante, Spain, today 23rd Friday 2025, facilitated a workshop themed “Communications for Health Professionals” at the Main Hall. The workshop targeted students from the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences, particularly students pursuing Pharmaceutical Science and Technology. The aim is to empower the students with potent communication skills to interact with patients and colleagues effectively in a clinical set-up.
The training has been made possible through the Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility programme, that supports visiting academic teaching staff with funding for a teaching period at a partner institution abroad.
Dr. Elizabeth Mwaniki, the Chairperson, Department of Health and Biological Sciences said the training is timely for our students because communication in the health system cannot be ignored.
“Pharmacists play a critical role in the treatment process of a patient. When it comes to health literacy, dealing with drugs, how to take medicine, especially adherence to instruction, pharmacists play a key role,” said Dr. Mwaniki.
“As such, communication skills cannot be ignored. We want to empower our students with communication skills so that we ensure that the patients they will deal with understand the message,” she added.
Professor Sanchez Marco, holds a doctorate in Health and Behavioural Sciences, and has extensive experience in nursing. Additionally, she is an experienced academician who has authored several articles on communication skills and clinical simulation aimed at developing teamwork skills in crisis situations.
