TU-K French Club Tops at National Eloquence Contest!

Some of the TU-K French Club members who participated during the contest together with their Patron Dr. Teresa Atieno Otieno.

“L’éducation est la respiration lente mais sûre d’un monde qui veut vivre.” With these powerful words, the TU-K French Club emerged the winners at the Concours d’éloquence (Public Speaking Contest) held on the 20th of May 2025 at Alliance Française de Nairobi, beating nine other teams from other universities and Alliance Française. The topics explored in this high-level competition included education, artificial intelligence, peace, and climate change — and our students rose to the challenge with excellence. Representing the University with poise, intellect, and linguistic brilliance, TU-K Team made an unforgettable impression with their eloquent speech on “L’éducation – L’outil radical pour reconstruire le possible” (Education – The Radical Tool to Rebuild What’s Possible).

The team was comprised of SophieTracy Anyango Owino, Secretary of the TU-K French Club, who opened the powerful presentation with grace, poise, and conviction. Gilbert Ologi, a second-year student in International Relations and Diplomacy, who presented the first and second arguments with clarity, depth, and confidence and Eloge Mulume, a first-year student in Mechanical Engineering, who delivered the third and fourth points with passion, insight, and a forward-looking vision.

“SophieTracy Anyango Owino was awarded Second Best Female Speaker of the entire competition — a well-deserved recognition of her eloquence, talent, and dedication,” Said Dr. Teresa Atieno Otieno.

“This September, she will travel to France as part of the prestigious English Language Assistant Programme, where she will share Kenyan culture and English language skills with learners in French schools.”

Dr. Otieno is the TU-K French Club Patron and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Science, Language and Communication Studies.

Dr. Otieno unwavering dedication to promoting the French language at TU-K continues to shape and inspire generations of young linguists.

She also applauded Amos Nashisako, former President of the TU-K French Club and student in the Department of Construction Management. Amos has played a pivotal role in nurturing the club’s growth and spirit. He too will be heading to France this September as part of the English Language Assistant Program, representing TU-K and Kenya with pride.

Speaking after the competition, Dr Atieno said French is more than a subject — it is a shared passion in the University. She further explained that the French language is spoken with pride across faculties — from Social Sciences to Applied Sciences and Engineering — the language unites our students with the world. As such, the club’s remarkable success at this national eloquence competition is a shining reflection of the University’s commitment to multilingualism, global engagement, and holistic student development.
