On Tuesday 22nd July, 2025, Members of the Food Science Club from the Department of Biological and Life Sciences (DBLS), made an enriching industrial visit to Thika-based Kevian Kenya Limited. The visit provided an exposure to key food and beverage manufacturing processes including; fruit juice extraction, pasteurisation, aseptic packaging, and quality control systems.
The team also visited the company’s laboratories.
This is one way of bridging academic learning with real-world industrial applications in food science and technology. A practice that has remained synonymous with the University.
Kevian Kenya limited (KKL) is a food manufacturing company in Kenya that produces fruit juices, fruit drinks, fruit nectars, drinking water, carbonated soft drinks and extracted Fruit juice/pulp having been in existence since 1992.
KKL Production Manager, Mr. Pater Gituma, welcomed the team saying it was a great honour for the company to host students from an institution of higher repute, like TU-K. He challenged them to work hard and diligently in their studies and apply for jobs and internships at the company.
“We are looking for qualified and hardworking food scientists who will help us in upholding high manufacturing standards. We are determined to move food technology to higher standards and we need people like you. So you have the opportunities to prove yourself.”
Mr. Patrick Ngare from the Department of Quality Control, termed the team jovial, interesting, inquisitive and eager to learn. He urged them to remain disciplined and maintain the same attributes. His sentiments were echoed by his colleague from the same Department, Mr Michael Njeru who challenged them to ambassadors of food Science.
He said, “You can break the ceiling and demystify the stereotypes surrounding food. By showing your competence, skills and knowledge. You have the potentials and you will go far.”
The club was led by the Patron, Ms. Angela Mwangi, and Chairperson, Ms. Nicole Otieno. Ms Mwangi thanked Kevian Ltd for opening doors for students to experience firsthand the practical aspect of the industry.
