On August 5, 2025, students from the Department of Hospitality and Human Ecology presented their final-year fashion project. The final-year students pursuing a Bachelor's Degree programme in Fashion Design & Technology displayed their skills, business initiatives, and creative works in a show that was filled with pomp and colour. Modelling was at the epicentre of the occasion, with several models gracing the catwalk as music set the rhythm and energy of the showcase. The annual event serves as a stage for students to demonstrate their talent, highlight their skills, and share their artistic expression.
According to Thematic Leader, Fashion, Clothing and Textile, Ms. Naomi Wangari Njuguna, the concept for the collection was “Sustainable Practices in Design”, where the students focused on using second-hand clothing, bedding, curtains and fabric waste to create innovative garments using upcycling and recycling practices to reduce waste and cost implications of using new fabrics.
She added that the students staged a sterling performance. She further stated that the students’ success promotes the image and reputation of the university and should therefore be celebrated.
Ms. Njuguna explained that the concept aligns with the ongoing project within the Department under the METODIC Project Title, ‘Strengthening the Links Between Industry and Academia for a Sustainable Textile Sector that Promotes Circular Economy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Reference Code: 101178999’.
Ms. Njuguna added, “This showcases the Department’s commitment to equip learners with the necessary skills in maintaining sustainable practices and circular production models in the fashion and textile sector.”
