Second and third year Diploma students held an exhibition to showcase their projects. The second-year students’ project was to design a Chapel for ‘Prayers Beyond Boundaries’ (PBB) Ministry in Mai Mahiu, while the third year students’ project was to design Innovation Centres. The event held at the University on 17th August, 2025, was attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Maurice Amutabi, Chairman Department of Architecture, Design and Planning (DADP) Dr. Joseph Kedogo, Lecturer Arch. Joel Oyuga, Pastor Amos Mbugua (PBB), Director Polygon Model Makers Ltd Mr. Caleb Otieno among others.
In his speech, the DVC congratulated the students for taking part in projects that provide a human response to a real need in Mai Mahiu, a place where faith communities will be going for prayers. “This initiative shows that design can become a bridge for peace, comfort and togetherness. For the 3rd year project, it is a culmination of intensive training you have undergone and a clear demonstration that you are ready for the real world,” said Prof. Amutabi.
He explained that the university community was witnessing more than an exhibition. “We are witnessing creativity, innovation and commitment to community service, embodied in the design of a chapel and individual projects. Our mission is to provide high-quality, practical and industry-relevant education that transforms lives and serves society,” he said, adding that TU-K will strive to become a leading technological university in Africa where knowledge meets application and innovation serves humanity.
Prof. Amutabi further noted that TU-K was working closely with the Ministry of education to strengthen the Department of Architecture, Design and Planning by investing in equipment, learning facilities and partnerships that will provide students and Faculty with access to world-class tools and resources.
He challenged both students and lecturers to engage in real world assignments where the classroom extends into communities, industries and places where people live and work. This he emphasized, will ensure that students step into the job market with confidence and creativity.
Dr. Kedogo thanked the DVC for finding time to grace the exhibition. He also thanked the PBB Ministry for having confidence in the students by giving them the mandate to design their chapel.
“I would like to assure the church that we will partner with you, to ensure that the project is fulfilled. We have trained the students very well and equipped them with both theoretical and practical skills. They are fully baked and ready for the industry,” he said.
He urged students to use the knowledge and skills acquired to change the Nation and entire region. The Head of Department challenged students to upgrade their studies by enrolling for bachelor’s degrees immediately after graduation.
His sentiments were echoed by Arch. Oyuga who termed the students’ projects as innovative and amazing. He challenged them to pursue excellence as their in their careers. He further asked them to uphold the name of the university and remain good ambassadors of the institution.
“You will soon graduate and become alumnae of this great institution. We appeal to all of you to come and talk to our students. Encourage, guide and inspire them. We have prepared you to go and work,” added Mr. Oyuga.
Students were presented with certificates of participation. Peter Wesley Shikuba (2nd year) took the first overall position in the second years’ studio live project. The first runners-up position in this category was taken by Derrick Omondi, while Aggrey Nashion took the second runners-up. The third and fourth runners-up were taken by Collins Poriot and Ian Jefwa, respectively.
Breytone Clevix was the overall winner of the third-year project. Fiona Kendi took the first runners-up, Kevin Mbugua took second runners-up, while the third runners-up position was scooped by Stephen Kariuki.
According to Arch. Oyuga, a studio project entails workflow in stages, right from conceptualisation, analysis, foam modelling & outline proposals, documentation, detail design & documentation and modelling. To give an overall performance, all the aforementioned are carefully considered, and marks are awarded by both internal and external examiners.
