The Technical University of Kenya Student union SATUK has new leadership for the year 2021/2022. Mani Peter Mwangangi was elected the Chair, and Birech Raechel Cheptoo as his Deputy. Harrison Boniface Muema was elected Secretary General, Kirera Denis Muchoki Finance Secretary, Oundo Barasa Fredrick Academic Secretary, Kimani Mercy Wairimu Gender and Social Welfare Secretary.

Nyariki Yuvenalis Ogeto was elected Sports, Entertainment and Culture Secretary, Meshack Ndanyi Men’s Hostel Representatives, Jelagat Betty was elected Women’s Hostel Representatives. Shampi Anna Ngendo Gakuna was elected Speaker and Anampiu Aaron Bundi as the deputy, Doris Jerop Serem was elected Clerk and Harry Agere Sigunga elected Sergeant-at-arms.
18 school representatives together with their deputies were also elected. (See table below)
Students Support Services Director Prof. Omondi Oketch said the elections should have be conducted in February this year but were rescheduled to September due to COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted university calendar, the new leadership was sworn in by the university secretary and legal officer Mrs. Ruth Kirwa. University VC Prof. Francis Aduol congratulated the outgoing team and challenged the incoming leadership to match up and ensure best running of the university. “I challenge the new team to leave a legacy, can you setup one or two things that you want to get through by the time you leave office,” Said the VC adding that one of the things the outgoing team has done for you people is the refurbishment of the students center, they never occupied the space, but for posterity.”
The VC further praised the outgoing SATUK leadership for their efforts in mitigating COVID-19 pandemic effects. “When covid came, the outgoing leadership quickly rallied themselves to assist students who could not leave Nairobi in good time, they helped people who could not get food or pay rent,” Prof. Aduol noted. “And when the students were about to come back, we had a lot of discussion with Cliff and team of best ways to accommodate changes including blended learning, setting up of hand washing points among other things”
“It is up to you to discern and determine how best you want to lead so that students may feel that you are leading them well. We have continued as a university in a very very peaceful environment in the past in terms of student leadership and the administration,” Prof. Aduol told the incoming team. “I can tell you that all student leaders who have left the university in past few years are all my friends, I would like to say good things about you and your team. Just to underline the relationship we have had with student leadership. I have about five of them undertaking their Masters programmes abroad, Kobia is in Dodoma, Jepkosgei just left to Holland to do an MSC in Geospatial Engineering, Brenda is in Scotland doing and MSC in Chemical Engineering, Ambuli is going to Egypt to do an MSC in Electrical Engineering, Mark Too just finished his Masters with us and has been appointed a Tutorial Fellow at the university” said Prof. Aduol
The VC however warned that their leadership needs to be level-headed in discharging their duties. “I don’t expect you to be sycophants of the VC or the administration, that is not leadership, sycophants are the most dangerous people to walk around with, at the right time they will desert you, you have not come to the university so that we train you like that, we expect you to stand for truth, remain cool headed, be sober, do not insult anybody,” There will always be problems, the difference is how you will solve them,” he added
Prof. Aduol noted that TU-K has become the envy of other universities across the country in terms of successful elections and how it conducts itself. He commended the office of the dean of students. Various university unions have benchmarked with TU-K in the past on best practices. “I have had no stress of your election, I am praying that it goes this way, it shows the level of which we have come as a university, it shows the maturity we have achieved, this university today is coming out as one of the respected university, and we are building a good named internationally,” said Prof. Aduol.
He noted: “We are ranked the 7th university in the land, part of this is because of peace the university is giving to the administration so that we concentrated on delivering
The Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academic Students Affairs Prof. Paul Shiundu on his part asked the incoming leadership to borrow leadership knowledge from the outgoing team. “As you take this position of leadership, remember there is a student population out there that must be served by yourself and not all of them voted for you, for whatever reasons that you should respect,” he noted. Prof. Shiundu further reminded the officials that leadership positions come with expectations and demands from the student’s population, most of which will be unrealistic. “You are a bridge between the students and the university administration, my office is ready and willing to work with you in your endeavors as student leaders”, Prof. Shiundu said.
Keeping time is important, do not keep people waiting just because you are a leader. The real world will expect that from us. Students Support Services Director Prof. Omondi Oketch assured the leadership that his office will work with them to ensure they effectively discharge their duties “I want to assure you that we will help you succeed, you have a competent and willing administration that will walk you through to make you the best of leaders, but only if you are willing,” Prof. Oketch said adding; “Now when you have been sworn in you will realize the nitty gritty details that will really challenge the promises you made.” He also appreciated the outgoing team for a successful tenure at office. “I also take this opportunity to thank the outgoing office, whom we have worked with very well. They have been a good team and have been very sober,” Prof. Oketch said Outgoing SATUK chairman Cliff Oketch appreciated the university administration and student leadership for successful tenure in office, this despite hit by Covid 19 pandemic.
“We are grateful to the administration for helping us go beyond our expectation, our biggest achievement was the adoption and facilitation of integrated physical and online learning and indeed noble and contemporary approach that has revolutionized learning at our institution,” He added, “The union was pivotal in running this programme and glad this will carry on to the next generations.” He challenged the incoming team to ensure smooth running of student leadership and the university at large.
Incoming SATUK chairperson Mr. Peter Mani Mwangangi committed to serve the student fraternity and ensure university carry on its uniqueness. “Comrades have chosen right instrument and together with all stakeholders, we will by any means make TU-K a better place for all of us,” Mr. Mwangangi said
